How to use perfume: How to store perfumes

Cómo usar perfume: Cómo guardar los perfumes

Now that you've learned how to wear perfume in the best way, it's time to learn how to store these precious liquids.

Contrary to the popular opinion that perfumes expire after 2 to 5 years, this statement could not be further from the truth.

Although some lighter citrus fragrances may oxidize over time and lose some of their more volatile notes, if stored properly, perfumes with more intense notes can last more than 50 years.

These are our tips to slow down the deterioration process as much as possible.

1. Store perfume in a dark, dry place with a constant temperature

Perfumes are made of scented oils in a mixture of ethanol and water, which makes their composition very volatile.

Therefore, they do not like temperature fluctuations, and places like bathrooms and damp basements should be avoided to prolong their shelf life.

Humidity, water, and sunlight break down perfume and directly affect its freshness.

So store your perfumes in a dark, dry place, avoid natural or artificial light, and place them in a location with a constant temperature, such as drawers, which are an ideal place to store perfumes.

As an extra safety measure, we recommend storing fragrances in their original boxes to make your life easier.

2. Keep the original cap

Keeping your fragrance without the original cap will lead to more natural oxidation than would otherwise occur.

Those who like to buy testers sometimes receive perfumes in plain boxes and without the cap, which could eventually result in this type of fluctuation.

Always keep the cap on so that the perfume oxidizes as little as possible. This way, the perfume will last longer.

3. Store them in a wine cooler

The question of whether perfumes should be stored in a wine cooler or a refrigerator is much debated in the perfumer community.

If kept at a constant low temperature, nothing will happen to them, and their delicate chemical balance will not be spoiled. The problem arises if they are stored this way and, suddenly, the refrigerator stops working, which could deteriorate the composition.

4. Avoid shaking the perfume bottle

While it might seem like a good idea to give the perfume bottle a little "shake" now and then to "activate the scent," unfortunately, it does the opposite.

As we learned a couple of paragraphs ago, oxygen is not a friend of perfume. So, to minimize air exposure, do not give your perfume additional oxidation through bubbles.

Therefore, it is best to shake the bottles as little as possible and keep the perfume fresh for as long as possible.

5. Limit the physical space for perfumes

Not only will you have your perfumes well organized this way, but you will also save a lot of money.

Using this technique, you will always have your perfumes in one place, well stored, and you will know if you should buy another fragrance before finishing another.

A small shelf will suffice.

Conclusion

These are the ways you can store your perfumes so that they stay in good condition for as long as possible. Tell us what methods you use for this purpose.
